Heard this story sometime back. Verbatim from here.

Five monkeys were in a room that contained a table in one corner, and a banana hanging from a string in the middle of the room. The monkeys figured out that if they dragged the table to the middle of the room, they could climb up and grab the banana. So they did. As one of the monkeys quickly hopped up and reached for the banana, hidden compartments in the walls suddenly opened, releasing high-pressure cold water that knocked the monkey off the table and drenched the other four monkeys.

They quickly learned that whenever one of them climbed on the table, all of them were soaked with cold water. They realized climbing on top of the table was a bad idea. Unbeknownst to the monkeys, the high-pressure cold water hoses were disconnected and removed.

The next week, one of the five monkeys was removed from the room and replaced by a new monkey. The new monkey saw the table and the banana dangling from the ceiling. Realizing that the banana was there for the taking, the monkey headed for the table. But fearful of being drenched by the high-pressure cold water, the other four monkeys pounced on the newcomer and beat the tar out of him. Every time the new monkey got near the table, the others beat him up. Soon the new monkey no longer went near the table.

By the third week, another of the original five monkeys was replaced by a new monkey. And like the monkey the week before, the newest member of the group tried to get near the table to move it over to the banana. Once again, the others beat up the newest member of the group. Even the first new monkey joined in.

Each successive week, one more of the original monkeys was replaced. The same thing happened every time; when the newest monkey attempted to get near the table, the others joined in to discourage him.

By the sixth week, not a single monkey was left from the original group. Not one remained that had been squirted with cold water. But when the newest monkey headed toward the table and tried to reach the banana, the other four monkeys “trained” him by beating the tar out of him.

If you could ask each monkey why it was beating up the new monkey, each probably would say, “I don’t know, that is just the way we do things around here.”

Approximately an year and half ago, ‘Maria Sohail Abbas’, a Pakistani girl, tried finding her space in Indian media. Don’t know how many remember her; She is now the wife of Anoop Jacob, son of Malayala Manorama (the media tycoon group, who owns MRF too) editorial director Thomas Jacob. Unlike the other recent Indo-Pak wedding which media celebrated till Shashi Tharoor took over, this one had full support from media and politicians, and should’ve been one of the grandest weddings in Kerala, to be attended by political big-wiggies, including the the three cabinet ministers from Kerala. Thanks to David Headly, this ended up in a rather small function at Kottayam Jerusalem Marthomma church in December 2008. If 26/11 haven’t happened, we could’ve read the Kerala effect on the Indo-Pak foreign relations all around the media. All of us mallus would’ve elevated to the third heaven directly.

But everything went for a toss, when the Home ministry got intelligence information that Sohail Abbas, ex-Deputy Commissioner of ISI, has got relations with Lashkar-e-Taiba. The Malayala Manorama Chief editor Mamman Mathew is member of National Security Council member – is a noteworthy factor here. The 30 member Pak team supposed to attend the wedding at Kottayam was denied the visa. The Mallu-to-Mallu relations between Mamman Mathew and M. K. Narayanan managed to get visa for 8 close relatives, and the wedding happened without fuss around it.

Now, relate this with the recent wedding fiasco created by media, including Malayala Manorama.

Question: If Sania was to marry Roger Federer, would Bal Thackaray have had any issues?

Page 7 does contain same article with a better reporting language and headline. What’s the point of having the masala version of the same news on the front page then?

In a secular state like India, what stand should government take in religious education? What should be their stand towards conversion and mixed marriages?

Well, the Left Government of Kerala had taken a clear stand on this, and it has attracted a lot of hue, cry and protest from various religious and social organizations. Even though there are a very few religious organizations supporting the government’s stand, their influence on the overall religious communities of Kerala is almost null.

For the uninitiated, here’s some background to this:

The State Education Council of Kerala has introduced a new class book for class 7 Social Studies. One particular section in the text book is titled “Mathamillatha Jeevan” (verbatim English translation: A life with out religion or Jeevan, who has no religion – Jeevan (life), being pratogonist’s name.

Here’s the verbatim translation of the above page.

Headmaster began to fill in the application form for a student, in presence of his parents.

“What is your name? ”
“Jeevan”
“Your father’s name?”
“Anvar Rasheed”
“And your mother’s?”
“Lakshmi Devi”
Headmaster heads towards the parents.
“What should I enter for child’s religion?”
“Nothing. Leave it blank.”
“And caste”
“Leave that too.”
“What if he wants a religion when he grows up?”
“In that case, let him choose the religion he wants.”

So what do you think? Is promotion of a selecting the religion for himself (how improbable it may be), whenever he is capable of doing that, really a threat to religious beliefs? Does that affect the secular system in place in any way? Will it make the society better, or worse?

How does this affect a 7th class student, who doesn’t even know what does it means if he is a Hindu, Muslim or Christian. Does that matter to him while selecting his friends?

In fact, an ideal education society should be able to provide unbiased view about all religions, and allows someone to take decisions on. Let this be the first step towards this. This step towards a secular education came 60 years after being a secular state. Better late than never.

In all it’s probability, government will be forced to withdraw the text books. If not, the very next government in power might remove it as well. So, people who take a blind stand against this, Kya Aap Saatvi Pass se Tez Hai?
